Prep Weekend

Where in the world has Kimmi been?

Studying for my final next week!  Love blogging, but I will LOVE graduating even more :)

But now I’m back and sharing my plan for my big challenge this month – travel. I’m heading out of town this week, all week, for work. Lovely. Not going anywhere super fun unfortunately. I have been spending all day getting ready to head out. Trying to eat organically also means NOT spending every night in a restaurant, so I put my new Food Saver Microwave Steam Bags to use. I packed up 2 meals so I’m ready to go.

chickenfajitasturkeyflower

Here’s to prep night!

On the right we have a turkey patty with riced cauliflower and tomato sauce.  Riced cauliflower is saving my LIFE!  Everything is organic or local, makes me happy :)   On the left, we have chicken fajitas.  Sliced up some chicken, added a ton of seasoning, onions, red peppers and green peppers.  Very yummy.  Added a ton of red pepper seasoning to make it kick.  Making your own mix is way better than a package.  I skipped the Old El Paso taco seasoning today since there are only 2 or 3 actual spices listed, then the rest were chemical substitutes.  It’s easy enough to use the real spices I have and it tastes much better. (Oh and those morningstar fake meats are NOT mine!   I gave up the fake meat, but my fiance lives off this stuff.)

These bags apparently are fully microwaveable, so this means they should be perfect for my trip.  I also will probably go out to dinner with friends once or twice, but I’ll be careful, scout’s honor!  I’m also packing up a bunch of Larabars, including a new flavor I’ve never tried – ginger spice and some organic almonds roasted in sea salt.  If you haven’t tried Larabars – run, don’t walk, and get some!  They are awesome, all natural, all unprocessed and wonderfully delicious.  A great replacement for your snickers or other candy bar fix.  I’m in training all day and food is NOT easy to get to there.  If I don’t bring it to training, I don’t get to eat anything until the lunch and end of day breaks.  So it’s important to bring proper snacks and fuel so I don’t leave and head for the first fast food restaurant.  I’ll get fruit up there.

I’m considering bringing my blender, haha, so I can make a green monster for breakfast.  But I’m not sure my hotel will approve.  I am staying in the chained hotel, as I can convert the points to airline miles and I’m trying to save up a ton for honeymooning next year.  I travel for work fairly often and I am going to have quite a few stays in hotels this year that hopefully will add up.  A good budget tip – if you travel for work, join the rewards clubs!!!  I have a friend who felt that was bad or stealing, but I think it’s just smart.  It really helps when you have personal travel and I’ve never worked for a company that cared.  I had my NWA reward number on file with my old company and I wasn’t the only one.  Especially now that I’m having a lot of personal travel and hotel stays I need to do, it’s really helping me out with the penny pinching I’m doing.  [/soapbox]

Now along with bringing food, I’m also bringing exercise.  I am famous for working out in hotels.  I’m going to bring some dvds and my transfirmer weights.  Love those things!  They are perfect for the road and great for a portable gym system.  DVDs plus the hotel gym are more than enough to keep me on track while I’m gone, yes?

I think that’s everything I need.  I still need to study, study!  I had the man quiz me today to help me get ready for my final.  Hey it’s bonding time and it was fun.  He actually found some of the stats in the study notes very interesting.  The class is on sustainability, kind of ironic considering my recent change of heart and education on food sustainability.  Anyway,  I managed to memorize most of the facts/statistics I need for the exam, but I do have a few more to work on.  I am pretty proud that I’m memorizing these stats so well – that stuff is really hard for me.  The scientist in me likes problems and not actual fact memorizing.  Oh well.  We also watched 12 Rounds – pretty dang decent movie (although pretty unbelievable at times).  It was our mini date night, since I’m leaving for a week.

Any rate, bed time!  We are supposed to hit the road for a ride tomorrow at 9am.  Means I need to be up in about 7 hours, oye.  I didn’t sign up for this, but I guess I should try to get up and go.  I also have to do my workout for my rotation, so here’s to that.

P.S. Ro – WTF is up with that bowler lunge?!?!?!  That was a doozy!

Alright, night folks!

Baker’s Joy

So I have a confession…

I love to bake.  And cook.  And make delicious treats in the kitchen.

Quite possibly the hardest thing about being healthy is getting out of the kitchen.  I used to be the girl that would make cakes, cookies, and pies just because, especially before I went back to grad school.  Especially when I lived in the wilds of western MD and had absolutely nothing to do 90% of the time.  Anyway, I digress, but the point is that I would decide at some point that I was going home and making a dessert to enjoy.  I lived by myself, so I would eat some and take the rest to work for the guys.  They were happy that they had sweets their wives didn’t want them to have or the single guys were just happy to have something sweet.  I was happy to share my experiments and it helped me not eat so much of it.

I still have been a baker, but instead of trying a new thing every week or two, it’s more like every few months.  And it’s been some kind of ridiculous attempt at a healthy cake, filled with lots of fake chemicals.  I’ve never been a splenda fan, my college analytical chemistry class made me highly skeptical.   Do a chemical research project on splenda with any kind of quasi chemical knowledge and I guarentee you will at least triple think about eating splenda.  Attempts to lose weight desperately made me try splenda, but I really never got too hooked.  I used honey or unsweetened applesauce in baking attempts instead.   Over the last year, since learning about paleo and learning more and more about food, I have really stayed out of the kitchen.  It’s made me sad, it’s such a fun hobby.  I have wanted to take a cake decorating class for years, and it’s one thing I want to take ASAP after graduating and getting my life back

So where does this admission of love for creating sugary goodness come from?  Last night, the man asked me if we could make a cake.  A lemon cake.  Okay.  He really wanted us to make it together.  Damn, I’m a sucker for cute couple baking time.  And he knows this.  So when grocery shopping, he stops in the baked goods aisle and asks if there is a gluten free lemon mix.  While he isn’t interested in my desire to go organic for himself, he is very respectful of my decisions and always asks me how to help.  Okay, I digress gushing over my babe.  Anyway, I’m like no, get what you want, and we’ll make it.  There isn’t a gluten free lemon that I know of and I didn’t really want cake anyway, so I figured he could just get what he wanted and the fun would be in the time spent making it.  Plus one of my favorite parts of the baking process is delivering a freaking awesome dessert to someone and watching them smile when eating it.

Hey, I’ve got southern belle grandmas that taught me that food = love.  Some things are hard to switch off, ya know?

But it made me think – okay Kim – there HAS to be someone out there who loves to bake but is trying to be healthy.  Can’t just be me, no?  Has to be a cookbook or blog or something out there that uses natural ingredients.  Or at least something much much closer than a box that maybe I can play around and experiment with and learn to make a real cake.  Or cupcake or something else beautifully baked that I can present and feel good about.  Feel good about baking something people enjoy AND feel good that it’s healthy and natural and supports my evolving beliefs on food.

Enter Google and enter Elana’s Pantry.  Oh. My. Goodness.

People – look at this carrot cake.

(source)

Now, if you can look at that picture and it doesn’t make you drool, just a little, then you just dont like cake.  She also has recipes for twinkies, fig newtons, and anything else you would want.  All the recipes are gluten free, most seem vegan.  Natural ingredients, healthier alternatives, just overall a better dessert choice, yes?

All the flour used is almond (real almond flour, the super fine stuff) or coconut flour.  For sweetness, agave syrup is used in most recipes.   Now, I’m still researching the agave syrup (aka agave nectar) but it seems like it’s super close to a raw food and minimally processed.  I am hoping is true, as it would be a nice addition to honey as a natural sweetener.

So any rate, now I’m excited :)   I can start experimenting with baking in a more natural way and a way that is gluten free, yay!  I can’t wait to try to make the first cake from this site when the man is at work or cycling or something and serve it to him WITHOUT telling him it’s vegan and/or gluten free.  Yeah, I’m sneaky :)

The First Dress

Alright – I need HELP!  I’m getting ready to travel out of town at the end of the month and I need a few shopping items

  1. Big cooler to keep in the car
  2. A lunch box actually big enough to carry containers in
  3. Good ideas for paleo foods that travel

I’m going to be coming home after the first weekend, but after that, then I’m going to be gone for like 8 days!  I really have to figure out what to start cooking!

In addition to the stress of traveling, I have a presentation for school next week and a final exam the week after.  So yeah, I’ve got a lot on my plate right now.  My fun activity to relieve stress is finding outfits for our engagement photos.  I want a kind of vintage style dress, but since I probably am going to have to pay some $$ for it, I’d like something cute that I’d wear again.  It’s my first wedding related dress shopping experience, yay!   I love these dresses:

Both the above dresses are from Miss Branche on Etsy.

Ridiculously cute right?????  For the 2nd one – I have to get thee arse immediately to the gym.  The tight fit isn’t forgiving, but between working out and spanx, I should be able to work it out.  Thank goodness for spanx engineers :)

Anyone have any other suggestions for vintage style cute dresses that come in plus sizes?

Playing Catch Up

So some other things I owe ya ;)

This my friends, is awesomphotoeness.  It’s the pic of my new favorite paleo meal.  I am really excited to find ways to make delicious recipes paleo friendly and delicious.  Yeah, I like my shish kabobs and deli chicken with the best of them – but this is really what paleo is supposed to be.  Fresh veggies, grass fed animal meat, and spices.  Yum :)

I also have been reading Jillian Michael’s book.  I have a lot with school (midterm project presentation next week and a test tonight), but so far, I love it!  I think I’ll have to break that book review up.  She really makes you think about food, life, and your surroundings.  I agree with a lot of what she says from a paleo experience but it’s also scary how she says some things that hit me like whoa – really???  I highly advise that you pick this bad boy up ASAP!  It is a life changing book if you are a processed food lover and a life affirming book if you have decided to go forward and eat a healthier, less processed lifestyle.

Anyway, in other news – I’m still losing weight, yay!  Now that I’m doing paleo strict for these 30 days (Let’s go Ro!!!), I’m feeling SO good again!  I’ll be honest – it sucks at time.  I’ve had to turn down pizza, cake, donuts, ect a few times in the last 9 days.  But I feel so good!  And let’s be honest – I feel this amazingly smug feeling when I say no.  It makes me feel like I did something, I did that.  I’M IN CONTROL OF MY BODY!!!!!  Call me insane, but hey, tis my feelings.photo 2

And another bit of awesomeness, my bun over there.  Yes my friends, I have a freaking bun (and you get to see my most beloved favorite headband).  Now.  I recognize this means nothing to 99% of you, but I have never, ever EVER been able to pull my hair into a bun.  It always breaks off and falls out or something equally stupid.  Sorry it’s blocking my face all stupidly, but it was the only way I could get a pic with my iPhone since my regular camera to computer hook up was jacked up.  But yeah, my hair has grown SO much in the past 6 months!  I don’t really understand why, my diet has really only started cleaning up a lot in April.  But I am hoping that taking better care of my insides will lead to more hair growth.  I have no clue how I want to do my hair for the wedding.  Actually, I do, but I don’t know if I can do it with my hair.  If my hair keeps growing at it’s current rate, then I should be able to pull it off quite nicely.  My hair regimine has improved a lot this year, mainly consisting of doing nothing to my hair :)   Now that I can bun it halfway, you better believe I will be rocking these bad boys to keep the heat and products out of my hair and hopefully, keep it growing healthy and strong.

Off to take my last quiz of the semester in my sustainability class!!!  I also did the most beautiful thing today – submitted my application for graduation for my Master’s of Engineering Degree!!!  That feels awesome :)

EA Active Review!!

So the man and I have been using EA Active for the Wii and trying to see how it fits in with our fitness goals.  We definitely had a lot to say.  And my thumb drive is corrupted, so no pics :(   I was trying to get it retrieved by the IT geeks, but alas, no cigar.  NO worries, we shall try them again.   But I didn’t want to wait to finally write the review!

The Pros:

  • The workouts are so variable and have so many options – that both of us can find stuff we like for a workout.  This is amazing, since the only other workout we both use is the Gold’s Gym Cardio Workout because he likes the boxing.  There are sports, cardio, and strength training (body weight and weights) for options.  It’s a pretty good combination and the workouts use everything – you don’t get bored.
  • The 30 day challenge is great.  It puts you right on a 30 workout rotation to get started, nice so you aren’t lost in the other options with the program.  The workouts had me pouring buckets of sweat, nice!
  • You can totally skip an exercise.  This may seem counter intuitive, but it’s very very handy.  Especially when the sensor issue (keep reading…) starts being a pain in the rear.
  • You can create a custom exercise with all the individual exercises and it flows w/o breaks.  This is what I thought WiiFit would be, so that is very very cool.
  • You can shut the trainer the heck up.   She’s very very annoying.  Very annoying.  But I can control her and tell her to be quiet :)
  • Integrates that stupid pricey Wii Fit Balance Board.  Not for a lot of stuff, true, but you know, every sports game should throw that thing in there somewhere so those of us who bit the hype feel better.

The Cons:

  • The stupid freaking leg band.  Okay EA.  Let’s talk about workout programs that maybe are going to be used at home by people trying to start a workout program (hello Wii Fit!).  Let’s also think about the fact that some of us carry our weight in our lower body.  Then let’s design a leg band that is not tiny.  Thanks.  My leg band will go on my leg, but it’s not pretty.  I’m not amazingly large for a big girl and I’ve seen plenty o big girls with thicker thighs.  So I know that for some of my bigger friends, it won’t work for them either.   It actually kind of hurts and leaves a mark, because it’s pulled so tight.  My fiance couldn’t get it on comfortably either.  It works, but it’s not okay.  We actually tried to come up with some other alternatives, like a fanny pack, a sock, ect.  Not really working.  If you can sew – you can probably whip up something good.  I don’t sew, so for me, it’s a giant FAIL!
  • The sensors.  The game uses the Wiimote and nunchuck directionality to figure out if you are doing the move.  So sometimes it has you doing some weird stuff.  The ending position for shoulder raises is the following.  Raise your arm for a normal shoulder press.  Okay now rotate your wrists so the top of your fist is pointing up.  So if you had a Wiimote in your hand, you Wiimote would go from parallel to the ground to perpindicular at the finish.  Note I am NOT a trainer – but wtf is up with that??  It’s only the upper body workouts that get annoying.  I have yet to do a whole set of bicep curls and the Wii recognize my whole set.  I don’t know if this is the game or the Wii – so I am trying to not dog the game out for it – but it is very annoying and messes up the workout flow.
  • I really wish Wii games would not make my avatars look like bloated princesses :)   Thanks.  Yeah I’m trying to lose weight.  Can you not make me look so effing lumpy to start with.  You can program your game to just look regular, geez!  Not a game play issue, just my big gripe with the Wii in general.

In general, I got a great workout, when the sensors worked, and eventually, I just learned if it got stuck on a exercise and a rep, I’d just skip the workout.  I really love the setup, the customization of the experience, and the overall attempt by EA to make a comprehensive game.  You can use this and get a good workout.  I love, love, LOVE that they use exercise intervals, as I’m a firm believer that is the best way to workout.  You bounce from cardio to weights and back again, which rocks.

So the final score, yes, there are more pros than cons BUT the cons really can interfere with game play.  I got really frustrated day 1 trying to get the leg thing working and it looks really BAD.  Normally the boy and I will workout in front of each other and not stress, but with that leg band, I was very conscious of it the whole time.  Each alternative would slide off or just not stay connected (the nunchuck has to face a certain direction), so it was a distraction.  The sensor issues caused me to stop my workouts, stop my flow and become generally irritated.

I can’t give this game nearly as high a mark as my other two Wii loves (My Fitness Coach and Gold’s Gym Cardio Workout).  It’s still good and still going to be used, but it’s just not something I see myself getting hooked on.  If the leg strap fit, it would be much much higher rated, but it’s not.  Stop making games that go up to 300 lbs where the equipment doens’t work for large people.  I’ve seen several threads about this on EA’s page, so I’m hoping when they come out with their expansion for this game, they address this size issue.

The Best Paleo Meal

to date anyway.

Seriously, this was fantastic, delicious, and will definitely be on repeat.  It had everything one would want out of a paleo meal.  Filling, delicious, fresh veggies, and so full of flavor.  I found this recipe and e-mailed it to myself a while ago and unfortunately I have no clue where in the world I got it from.  Everyone must try this recipe ASAP.  I bought everything I needed for the recipe at the local farmers market for about $10.  That includes the organic grass fed pork sausage, which was $6 by itself.   So not only is it a delicious recipe, it is incredibly cost effective.   Sorry for the lack of photo – I started eating and didn’t even think of a photo becuase  I was so enjoying this meal!  I’ll add on later, promise!

————————————————————————————

FIESTA CABBAGE
1 pound grass fed pork sausage (Cibola Farms!!)
2 tbs olive oil
4 ounces red onion, diced, 1 medium
1 green pepper, diced
2 pounds cabbage, chopped, 1 medium head
1-2 medium tomatoes, chopped
1 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon pepper

In a very large nonstick skillet or wok, brown the sausage, which has been cut on the bias into 1/4-inch slices in olive oil. Remove the sausage from the pan and reserve the drippings.  In the same pan, sauté the onion and green pepper in the hot drippings over medium-high heat for 3 minutes. Stir in the cabbage, sausage, tomatoes, salt and pepper; cover and cook on low heat 15 minutes or until the cabbage is tender. You may want to uncover the pan during the last 5 minutes to allow some of the liquid to evaporate.

Makes 6 servings

————————————————————————————

This is the recipe with my edits to make it 100% paleo friendly, meaning it’s basically all natural and fresh produce.  The original recipe added butter to the drippings to saute the onion and green pepper.  That is  NOT necessary, especially if you use a nonstick pan and use real sausage.  I don’t know how the pre-cooked stuff will react when cooked like this, but I imagine that you could use a little olive oil instead of butter if it doesn’t leave any drippings.  The original recipe also used a kielbasa or smoked sausage instead of a fresh all natural sausage and a can of diced tomatoes instead of fresh diced tomatoes.   Those are both a matter of personal taste, cost, and if you are me – what the heck is in the house.

This meal also gets high marks for being quick, easy, and extremely family friendly.  It’s also a one dish meal, so minimal dirty dishes.  It seems way more junk food like than it really is.  You could mix up the sausage types and use a sweet one or a hot/spicy one to get different tastes.  I love meals like this, which can really be easily molded to match the dietary needs and personal preferences of each chef quite easily.

The Aftermath

So, yesterday was a HUGE challenge!  How did I do?

If I must say so myself – I am SO proud of my eating yesterday!!  It was awesome, paleo, and clean.  I had burgers from the grill sans bun + grilled onions on top and tons of veggies and cabbage.  Snacks were watermelon goodness.  Later for dinner after the fireworks, we went to Guapos and I had their rotisserie chicken and plantains.  In all, I had a fantastic time (which is what matters, yes?) and ate in a way that made me feel good, energized, and like I was on the right track.  I hate feeling bad about the way I look or eat, and this was not that kind of day at all.  So the aftermath of yesterday is nothing but goodness and the confidence that I can have a good time and eat healthy in the face of desserts, carb heaven, and dining out.  Confidence is a beautiful thing.

Today, the man and I headed off to the farmers’ market.  He had never been with me and he got one heck of a shock.  I think he thought I was kidding about the deals, but after the first booth where we cleaned up, he’s hooked.  We spent $6 and got  a red onion, tomato (3),  bell peppers (3), and red peppers (2).  That’s at least $10 at the grocery store.  We also got great deals on cherries, cabbage (88 cents for a big head!!), and nectarines.

I’m a little distracted, gotta finish up a school project and get ready for a test this week.  I’ll return with some reviews on EA Active!

Celebrating my Independance

Happy 4th of July!  This year is a low key one for us.  Just going to go hang out with friends and have bbq, games, and good times.   I’m really looking forward to it :)

Since I KNOW food is going to be all up in my face today, I decided to start the party off with a good workout.  I did the EA Active 30 day workout day 2 (review coming soon (with pics :) ) and YES Mr. EH and I totally have an addiction to Wii workout games.  He’s already sending me links about this game coming in the Christmas season!) and then yesterday’s SGBC exercises.  I missed them yesterday because we spent FOREVER trying to figure out to work the EA Active thing and then I had to make food stuffs for today.  But no worries, I got a hardcore calorie burn and feel amazing.  I find that when I have a rough food day ahead, it’s good for me to get a hard workout in at some point during the day.  It helps remind me to rein it in a little.

For the party today, I made two salads.  The first is my mom’s potato salad recipe.  It’s delicious and 100% not healthy because of the fake chemically but delicious miracle whip, but it’s always a crowd pleaser.  Then I made a salad for me, a duplicate of the salad the man made a few weeks ago with red onion, cucumbers, and tomatoes.  I threw some balsamic dressing on top today to give it some flavor and let it marinate for a few hours.  Eventually I will learn to make my own dressings, yes?  Any rate, we will be helping friends pack while BBQing, so I guess I’ll have a pretty full day of activities.  I’m also bringing my bag o Dole pitted dates with me.  These have become my fall back “candy” while primal/paleo eating.  It’s a fresh food, not processed (except Dole has so kindly removed the pits, which makes eating them in public much much more graceful,  haha), and is sweet like candy.  I try not to eat more than 3ish at a time, so I don’t overdo the sugar, as they are one of the sweetest natural foods out there.  Any rate, I am bringing them as my go to sweet snack.  As far as protein – it’s a BBQ!  For any paleo chica, it’s one of the easiest social events.  Meat cooked over an open fire – can’t get any more basic than that :)

This is my first real social event where I am going to try to stay 100% paleo, so hopefully it goes well.  I usually allow myself cheats and splurges on party days, but since I seem to have more and more social events, I have to learn to adapt my eating and remember that I’m there to have fun with my friends, not just to eat.  I figured heck, today is Ameria’s big party to celebrate our Independance….why not celebrate my own independance from food addictions, sweets, and all the other crap that makes me unhealthy and overweight?  I totally have food addiction issues to sweets.  I can eat sweets ALL day and I have in the past.  It’s a learned behavior – my mom only recently (like in the last year or so) really broke her candy addiction.  I grew up with sweets always around and even though my mom wanted me to lose weight, I had so many bad food habits that it was hard.  I learned how to manipulate the calories in/calories out thing with WW and running, but never really dealt with the bad habits.  When you are 17/18, you can lose weight that way.  But then it comes back on and when you are 27, it doesn’t come off as easily.  Ah the joys of being old ;)   Kidding!  But seriously – today is Independance Day and today, I’m claiming my independance from crappy processed foods and chemical additives.  Instead, I’m embracing a life of whole foods, farmers market finds, and natural goodness.

Have a happy celebration today everybody :)

Gold’s Gym Cardio Workout – Reviewed!

So this morning I did the Gold’s Gym Cardio Workout for the Wii. I thought it would be a good workout from when me and the man played around with it this weekend.

30 min = DEATH of the upperbody!

Seriously – I’m super sore right now in my shoulders and arms. And I worked up one heck of a sweat this morning. The crazy thing is that I did the suggested beginner workout and feel this way! I have had quite a few lower body injuries. Left ankle broken in 2 places in middle school, right ankle hairline fractured in college. Right knee sprained in high school and left knee sprained in 2008. I get flair ups occasionally in the knees and it’s been suggested that my random flair up of foot issues this weekend is most likely from the old injury. In short – having a workout that is mainly upper body that gives a quality workout is awesome for me. i can’t do a lot of lower body work on a continuous basis w/o the knees getting crikey. So instead of shuffling, I got deep in the boxing stance today and did the workouts that didn’t have any shuffling. I can totally see myself using this workout on days when my knees are bothering me or if I have another flare up of whatever this was.

(sidenote) This is one reason I NEED to lose weight! The PT is convinced that part of my problem is that I’m doing hard working out at a high weight and I have been doing that for a long time. I haven’t been anywhere near my goal weight since 2001, yet I’ve done a few 5Ks, a few triathlons, and trained for a 10K (damn that tropical storm :( ) I’m starting to get to the place where sheer determination is not going to overcome physics.
(/sidenote)

So yeah – this is a GREAT workout for those of us who have bodies that don’t like continuous hardcore exercise. It’s also a good workout for anyone who is recovering from a lower body injury or needs an easy leg day after killing it at the gym or CF.

In short, catch this game while it’s on sale, save some bucks, and burn some calories :)

30 Day Primal Challenge Report

So yesterday was officially my last day of the 30 day primal challenge.  How did it go?

Pros:

  1. Using the 80/20 rule gives you room to eat favorites or when you aren’t in 100% control of the menu without feeling like you failed.
  2. NO calorie counting!  Some days I did journal what I ate just for a check, but I like just writing down items instead of item + number.  Something is very freeing about that.   And I don’t get into headcase mode.
  3. You don’t really need a list of foods to shop.  Literally, sticking to the outside of the store means you are about 95% likely to buy all primal goods.
  4. Lots of energy, better sleep, and generally feeling really good.
  5. It’s nothing but real food.  No HFCS, no gluten, no crap chemicals.  It’s not going to mess with your hormones or your body chemistry.  I also learned about what my body does and does not like in the mornings.  When I had a meat or egg breakfast, I was hungry again in like an hour.  When I had a Green Monster, I was alert and fine for HOURS.

Cons:

  1. No calorie counting.  I’m trying to get out of it because mentally, it messes with my head.  But when I’m out and not able to eat primal (dinner parties particularly), I felt a little lost after so many years of eating off a list or by number.  I guess this could be better over time, but I did feel a little lost.
  2. Expensive.  I’ve spent a LOT more on groceries trying to get grass fed/finished meat.  It’s literally 2-3x the price.  Now that the Farmers’ Market is starting to have more fruit, I probably could offset at least half the cost with the savings in fruit and vegetables over the grocery store.  But it was hard some weeks to stay in the grocery budget and get good meat.
  3. Eating outside of the house.  I did not attend a SINGLE social event that was primal friendly.  People just don’t make plain or primal friendly marinades for meat, plain salads, or carb-free side dishes.
  4. If you don’t do all the cooking at home, be prepared with backup meals.  Often I had to make something else for dinner because the man made a dinner that was 100% not primal.  Since we depend on leftovers, it would suck for DAYS.  This contributed to the higher grocery bill.

The freedom rocked and knowing that I had a green light because it was a primal food was great.  The primal list isn’t gimmicky and I like that I was cutting out HFCS.  I even bought organic ketchup w/ no HFCS when I was out of my precious Heintz.  FYI – do NOT get the low carb/reduced sugar heintz.  It is DISGUSTING.  I got the cheaper, Wegmans Organic Ketchup, and it is fabulous.  It’s thick and tomato-y and tastes really good.  No chemicals, no fake crap.  All deliciousness!  I hated the way I anticapted social situations, although I even felt that way on WW a little.  The difference was that on WW, I could use flex points and earn activity points while on primal, it’s either good or off the list.  There is no medium.  If there is a lot of social stuff to do, you will be below 80/20 on average for a week unless you are lucky enough to have primal friends.  Low calorie diets have a lot more of the chemically stuff that primal tries to avoid, so it’s not a good mesh.

I also gotta say – it’s hard being primal in a modern world.  My fiance’s diet is based on the book The Flexitarian Diet, so he only really eats the meat the I cook for dinner.  His dinners tend to be full of veggies (great), whole wheat pasta (eh…), and fake meat aka soy (oh noes!).  In the real social world, people tend to eat a lot of processed stuff.  Chances are if you aren’t at home, you aren’t primal.  Obviously at a restaurant, you can ask for stuff on the side or not at all, but at your friend’s house, you aren’t going to ask them to make a special dish for you just because you are trying to eat primally.  I really believe this is why the 2nd half of the month was harder and resulted in siginifcantly less weight loss than the first half.  I had a lot more social outings and I paid for it.

So anyway, the numbers.  I’ve lost about 12 lbs.  I have gotten a LOT of compliments that I look leaner and slimmer, so I take that as a big YAY!  My clothes fit nicer and I feel energized.

From here on out – I don’t know, lol!  Actually, I do. I’m still going to eat primal.  The benefits outweigh the cons IMO.  The biggest challenge I have is learning to say NO at social situations.  I never ever really was good at saying no to food when it looks good, and I still am not.  I also need to learn how to pack food on the run.  My busy days are still really hard for me food wise.  I do think I will allow *some* whole grains, but I will be very selective and still watch them.  When I go for a long time w/o dairy and gluten my stomach is amazingly settled.  Having a little of either, or both, and my stomach is very unhappy.  I’m very serious about getting rid of HFCS and other chemicals slowly out of my diet.  I even have the man selecting more foods from the organic section instead of the regular aisle at the store.  I don’t think it’s a coincidence that obesity started to rise when our food became more chemicals and preservatives than actual real food and I absolutely know that I want to feed my kids an organic diet.  I’ve really become a convert in that area for sure!  I used to think that organic was code for tree hugger, lol!  Now I have come around to the other side.

Anyway, time to get out of here!
